Supporting paraeducators

Do you have paraeducators in your school or classroom? Of course, you do. According to the U.S. Department of Education, during the 2018-2019 school year, there were almost 521,000 special education paraeducators in the country. That’s more than the number of actual special education teachers that were employed!

Now is the time for schools to invest in special education inclusion models that benefit all students

Ivan was a fourth grader with big brown eyes, a wide smile and a quiet demeanor who refused to enter my classroom. “Everyone thinks I’m stupid,” he’d say. I’ve changed his name to protect his privacy.

At the time, my school employed a pull-out model for students with disabilities, meaning they were removed from their assigned classrooms to receive specialized services and supports. This left Ivan feeling embarrassed, ostracized and resistant to putting forth academic effort.

The Data Meeting Toolkit

This month we are excited to highlight an IDEA Data Center (IDC) toolkit, the Data Meeting Toolkit. This toolkit was born out of the desire to help states and agencies move from the collection and reporting of data to the use of data to inform decision-making. Using high-quality data can help you allocate resources effectively and maximize outcomes for your students. However, data discussions can sometimes seem overwhelming. The Data Meeting Toolkit includes a suite of tools that support success before, during, and after data meetings. The tools offer practical and specific examples of how to use the toolkit to address a range of data meeting needs.
